OAK+CRU Opens With Style

Pride could be seen on the face of Daniel Bibby, General Manager of the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort as he stood in front of a few hundred guests during his address on the occasion of the Grand Opening of OAK+CRU Social Kitchen & Wine Bar.

This day was a long time coming.  More than $9.4 million was spent as massive renovations and a reimagination were done over the past year – but the changes unfolded after countless meetings, and hundreds of design decisions long before hammer was laid to wood.

Bibby introduced some of the key people involved in the work, including Gordon Mackay, Partner & Strategy Director at mackaywong who spoke of the inspiration behind the final design of OAK+CRU.  mackaywong has designed some of Canada’s top restaurant and bars including Montecito Restaurant and Gretzky’s in Toronto.  Steve Giblin, President & Chief Executive Officer at SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts also spoke of his pride in being associated with the new endeavour.  Locally, Kevin Edgecombe, owner of Edgecombe Builders acknowledged the hard work and dedication performed by his crew who helped bring the design to fruition.

Rounding up the speeches, Don Cleary, President of Marriott Hotels of Canada talked about his discovery of the Resort in Kelowna and how impressed he was with everything the Okanagan Valley had to offer.  Later, Mr. Cleary spoke about how his love of hiking, golfing, biking blended nicely with what we have here in Kelowna and our Valley.  He thought the development and construction of  OAK+CRU Social Kitchen & Wine Bar was top notch.

Meanwhile, guests were treated to an array of dishes prepared by the OAK+CRU kitchen staff, under the direction of Executive Chef Iain Rennie and Executive Pastry Chef Arthur Chen.  Local wine and special cocktails, featuring honey from our own hives situated on the roof of the Resort, were served.

Among the highlights were tours of the Wine Experience Centre, featuring 2800 bottles and 300 labels from the Okanagan Valley.  Local winemaker Howard Soon could be found close to his section of wine in the Centre, giving tasting notes to the many guests who were lucky enough to get a private tour from Howard.

A large part of the crowd gravitated to the fabulous outside patio and enjoyed our famous Okanagan sunny weather and panoramic views of the spectacular Okanagan Lake.
